Terra Ferma - Turtle Crossing (2016 Update)

Platipus: 1997

(Click here to read my original TranceCritic review.)

And finally this CD. Turtle Crossing is the last time I’ll be doing a full 20xx Update post for some time now, in no small part because my current alphabetical backlog is ridonkulus-yuuge, looking at a ten week trip through it all. How did that happen? I didn’t even take on anyone’s collection! Well, unless you count raiding used shops. More than that though, I’m almost through the CDs from this blog’s initial, aborted run. I posted eighty-nine reviews during that time, and with this one, have done forty-two 20xx Updates. About twenty-one of those original posts will never see an update, as I no longer have the releases associated with them – not surprising since a good chunk of ‘em were singles promptly deleted from my harddrive soon after (gotta’ save on that 2.3GB of space!). That leaves a grand total of just twelve more 20xx Updates after this, a ‘milestone’ that I’ll probably reach… oh, next year, maybe. Ha-ha, hah …I’m never finishing this project, am I.

Okay, enough statsing; we’re here to hear music, not crunch numbers. And playing Turtle Crossing again, yeah, she still holds up, though there was little doubt she wouldn’t. Whatever ‘dated’ aspects you might level against Terra Ferma’s debut album would have been the same nitpicks I highlighted in my original review for TranceCritic, so if you need to read them, click the linky above. No, trust me, there are some actual critiques in all those words. You just have to dig for them, sifting through the dry prose like they’re the gritty gravel and stones of so much frozen, alpine wastes. Mind the yeti though; he’s cantankerous at times.

As there’s not much else to say regarding Turtle Crossing, here’s some interesting details about the man behind Terra Ferma that I’ve since unearthed. I mentioned how Claudio Giussani was also an initial member of Union Jack with Simon Berry, and while the two no longer collaborate, Giussani did provide a few remixes for some of Berry’s recent Art Of Trance material. For some reason though, he used a completely new alias of Kaukuta for the rubs. What, is Terra Ferma locked into some legal limbo? Maybe, since those Art Of Trance singles came out on Porcupine Records, the short-lived successor to the original Platipus print. More recently though, Berry re-relaunched his old label as Platipus Music, and has been in the process of making the label’s entire original catalog available again. Sadly, Turtle Crossing remains among the missing albums, but you can get a mail-order CDr, if you so desire a hardcopy.

Finally, a tidbit of pre-Platipus information regarding Mr. Giussani that totally blew my mind upon learning it. Before he discovered acid and trance, ol’ Claudio had his hand in the early UK hardcore scene. Par for the course with lots of producers, but his partner behind the console was none other than jungle legend Aphrodite, working under the name Urban Shakedown. I honestly can’t even with that info drop!

Union Jack - Pylon Pigs (Original TC Review)

Platipus: 2009

(2015 Update:
Ugh, I hate it when a review starts with reference to other TranceCritic reviews not written by me. How can readers unfamiliar with that defunct website know what in the blue blazes I'm talking about in the here and now? Sure, I kinda' got my own 'Simon Berry Backstory' out of the way with the
Platipus Records Dream Collection, but maybe folks are curious to read what ol' Jack had to say about that Art Of Trance collection too. Perhaps I ought to pester him to upload his old material. Or at least get back in the reviewer's chair at some point, heh.

Good news for
Pylon Pigs is the singles still hold up remarkably well. Berry and Not-Claudio tapped into something timeless with Papillon and Funnelweb, though it undoubtedly helps absolutely no one else tried emulating their acid trance in the modern era. Unfortunately, that also means this album never gained enough buzz to stage a massive comeback, neither for Berry or his Platipus/Porcupine print. I'm hoping he's got it in him to release a couple new tunes at some point in the future, but it looks like this album's about the end for his LP efforts.)

IN BRIEF: Fitting in.

Hooray for me, J’[ack Moss] handle most of the lengthy back-info regarding Simon Berry with his recent review of Art Of Trance’s Retrospective. Of course, that’s not the whole story, as there’s also the business of Berry’s other big project from the Platipus glory years. That’s right, none other than Clanger. No, wait… Poltergeist, that’s it! Vicious Circles?

Yes, yes, it’s Union Jack. The project was a collaboration with Claudio Giussani, and though short-lived the two of them undoubtedly produced some of the most famous Platipus records together; Two Full Moons, Red Herring, Lollipop Man, plus several remixes of roster mates. After a well-received album (There Will Be No Armageddon), both went their separate ways pursuing solo careers, and everyone figured the name Union Jack would forever be put to rest.

Lo, such has not been the case. Simon Berry has been feeling the production itch again, and after spending most of this decade out on the fringes of the trance scene’s collective consciousness, has re-emerged with the Union Jack banner, sporting all-new material for our ears to feast on. Only… this isn’t the same Union Jack of old, as Giussani is nowhere to be seen. Instead, former Clanger collaborator Paul Brogden takes his place. And since a reunion of Clanger wouldn’t garner nearly the same amount of buzz as a reunion of Union Jack would… But hey, Claudio had no problem in letting them carry on the name in his absence, so it’s all good.

Only thing, part of what made Union Jack so memorable back in the day was Claudio’s influence. If you compare his and Berry’s solo efforts (as Terra Ferma and Art of Trance, respectively), Claudio tended to be the overall better songwriter, if not the better hit-maker (though admittedly, Berry’s biggest hit was by way of a remix from Ferry Corsten). That may have been in part because he wasn’t nearly as prolific as Berry, so the quality-control ratio was more concise, but there it is. Bottom line is in taking out one-half of a strong tandem and replacing it with another who hasn’t had anywhere near the same sort of success (sorry, Paul), we unfortunately don’t end up with a Union Jack that can't match up to the previous version.

Not to say there aren’t some great cuts to be had on Pylon Pigs - there are. If you haven’t heard lead single Papillion by now, chances are you haven’t been anywhere near prominent trance forums. Of course, this isn’t trance as it’s come to be known, but rather something of a throw-back to the years of acid-yore. Given extra weight by modern production, the acid baseline burbles with power as thick no-nonsense kicks pound away. Then you have spacey, floaty pad work, bright bursts of synthy arpeggios, and rhythmical spoken syllables, staples of many a Union Jack track. It’s as vintage a sound as you’re likely to find but doesn’t sound dated in the slightest. In fact, it has become something of a statement for folks favoring old school trance, a perfect example that the genre can be just as relevant today as it was over a decade ago so long as DJs give it ample exposure. Similar cut Funnelweb (of which aptly bookends the album with Papillon) and deeper cut Longhorn will undoubtedly add ammo for such arguments. Elsewhere, the ‘90s comparisons continue with a cool-groove tune in Vowel that’s reminiscent of Underworld, while Triclops comes across like a long-lost Hooj Tunes single.

All well and good for nostalgia’s sake, and certainly there’s nothing wrong in resurrecting sounds that are thusly proved to be timeless; however, aside from Papillon and Funnelweb, you don’t really get the sense we’re hearing anything creatively fresh either. Most of the melodies are predictable and safe, with execution suggesting Berry and Brogden weren’t all that fussed in pushing the genre anywhere new. They do get a little indulgent in their experimental side with downtempo cuts like Submerge, Mainline, and Lifeblood, but these feel more like tide-over tracks between the clubbier cuts than anything else.

On top of all that, there’s Blink, a track I’m at a loss to figure out why it even exists. Aside from a few bits of those vintage rhythmic syllables, it’s about as generic an ‘mau5 clone’ as you’ll ever come across; there’s nothing about it that makes you say, “Now that’s a Union Jack track.” If you’ve gone out of your way to prove classic acid-trance can work in a contemporary climate, why also go out of your way to include a track that is not only creatively weaker than anything else on the album, but adds nothing to the over-saturated “8th-note trance” glut in the process? Such it goes, though.

Overall, despite the positive things offered by Pylon Pigs, this isn’t the triumphant return of acid trance some have proclaimed it to be. Rather, it’s quite a safe album, as though Berry and Brogden were more concerned about testing the waters with their sound instead of making the kind of definitive statement many hoped. It’s not the most flowing listening experience either - having the blissy ambient Submerge as the second track and lodged between two club bangers just doesn’t make a lick of sense.

I still recommend this as a pick-up - Papillon, Funnelweb, and Triclops easily make it worth the entry fee, and though the rest won’t light the world on fire, they will still entertain for the most part. However, despite what the hype circles have been purporting the last few months, Pylon Pigs is far from a modern classic.

Various - Platipus Records: The Ultimate Dream Collection

Popular Records: 1995

I honestly haven’t a clue how this 2CD collection came to be. On paper, it’s simple enough: the first two volumes of Platipus Records’ annual label showcase in a single, tidy collection – an ‘ultimate dream collection’, if you will! – now made available in North America without obscene import fees. Simon Berry’s growing print needed a foothold over here as it was, and surely one of the homegrown, underground electronic music labels would provide an outlet: Moonshine, Hypnotic, Instinct, maybe even Astralwerks. Wait, you’re going with Popular Records? The upstart Euro-Dance label that’s promoting the likes of J.K, 2 Brothers On The 4th Floor, and N-Trance? Berry, you boss, how did you pull a deal like that off? Your brand of acid trance might have critical buzz in your U.K. homeland, but here in Americas, no way was there any commercial potential for-

Oh, Robert Miles’ Children (Dream Version) is on here. Well, that explains that. Popular just wanted that one track, and you let them have it in exchange for taking on the first two volumes of Platipus Records as well. That’s my theory, but if so, bravo, Mr. Berry, for it sure conned a few people I knew into buying this double-discer for only one song.

Contrarian that I must be though, I bought Platipus Records: The Ultimate Dream Collection for the other twenty tracks. Okay, roughly eighteen others – I can do without the goofy What? from Catalyst and way under-produced Sea Of Tranquility from Art Of Trance. An affordable 2CD set of trance though, how could any budding 'cracker resist such a deal? I'll put up with Children if it means I get to discover new artists like Art Of Trance, Union Jack, Poltergeist, and Clanger! Wait, why do they all sound so similar, what with distinct burbling acid basslines, rough rhythms, and vocal ethnic samples?

Yeah, I realize Platipus was young, had yet to gather an extended roster they could promote, but holy cow, Mr. Berry, whore out your own music much? Whether as original artist, collaborator or remixer, ol' Simon has credits in all but four tracks: the aforementioned Children and What?, plus Quietman's Plastic Gourd, and Technosommy's Elektron Bender. Of course, this is great news if you can't get enough of his vintage acid trance, with plenty of classics making up the track list: Two Full Moons & A Trout, Red Herring, Cambodia, The Colours, Seadog, Orange, and Cactus. And hey, there's even two versions of Octopus (original and Man With No Name Remix) and Vicious Circles (Spirit Level Mix and Union Jack Mix). This last one's a bit funny hearing twice, since, beyond a bassier climax, there isn't much difference between the two mixes. Then again, they were initially on two separate releases so most folks wouldn't have noticed it.

They'd definitely notice how much of a sore-thumb Children is on this collection though - off to BMG with ya', Mr. Miles. There's acid trance to soak in here instead!

(2010 Update:
Ugh. Another meticulously detailed review. I find these read better if you just ignore the whole middle sections, as the first couple and last couple paragraphs basically sum up my thoughts. Still, if you don't mind long, dry descriptions of music, I suppose this is alright.)

IN BRIEF: Music and themes best not forgotten.

Claudio Giussani created some classic acid trance numbers with Simon Berry such as Red Herring and Two Full Moons And A Trout when they produced together as Union Jack. Their collaboration seemed to be short lived though, as Berry went on to do big things as Art Of Trance and Giussani went onto, um, not-as-big things as Terra Ferma.

Which is a shame really, because if this album is any indication, Giussani is an exceptional producer. His ability to utilize natural percussion so they co-exist with your typical trance patches - rather than stand out as gimmicky - is uncanny. Coupled with creating stirring, somber melodies being melded with fast-paced acidy rhythms, and you have some truly captivating tracks on offer here. The added bonus is Giussani manages to keep things thematic, namely drawing upon Tibetan milieus, a bit of a unique setting as far as trance tends to be concerned.

As the opener for this album, Lunar Surprise makes abundant use of such elements. After a woodwind intro, things begin to speed along quite nicely with suitable patches of dark electronic squelches and effects offset by melodic string pads and piano arpeggios while the percussion is a nice blend of the synthetic and organic. Layers are continuously added, building up to a breakdown some five minutes into the track. Here, we're introduced to some tribal chants as strings and pianos play in the background and things build back up to right where we left off with this interlude. Things play out quite typically from here: previous elements coming and going for the remainder four minutes, with extra layers of organic percussion being gradually added to a rousing climax. All and all, Lunar Surprise is a strong start to this album.

Aiming straight for the dancefloor, Fire starts out with quick kicks and acidy basslines. Layers of synth pads, acid squelches, and organic percussion are continuously added, building momentum for over three minutes into a minor breakdown. A high-pitched acid melody is introduced here and, in a surprising contrast to the darker overtones of the start of this track, it has quite the melancholic tone about it. Once Fire gets going again, the melody doesn't stick around for long, instead letting the rhythms dominate here with subtle stuttering strings taking over for the duration.

Moving away a bit from the somber melodies is The Scream, despite the use of voice pads in the beginning. That isn't to say this track is devoid of emotion, rather it's just not as important here. Darker and harder than the previous two, many pitch effects are employed on its acid and synth patches. Structurally, this song isn't all that far removed from the previous two as it follows the more traditional lead-in, mild breakdown, brief build, rush to the finish template of many trance tracks. Even with some string pad moments, the acid lines are the dominant element throughout, keeping the energy going. After all, if a sample going, "WHOOooooooo-rrrAH!" doesn't spark an adrenaline surge, I don't know what will.

Visions starts things off a little slower compared to what's come before but it too is a fairly energetic track. A deep bass line is introduced, something that, while not completely lacking, hasn't had enough attention given to thus far on this album. The main riff uses some stuttering synth stabs but it doesn't really come across as anything that hasn't been heard on the album to a varying degree yet. In fact, Visions has quite a bit that is structurally similar to everything else that has come before on this album. There are some tribal-like male chants in a breakdown but, unlike Lunar Surprise, they don't really add much to the overall texture of the song. Probably one of the most unique aspects I noticed are the hand claps in the percussion. At some point midway through (I'll let you discover where; why should I ruin all the fun?), they go from straightforward strikes every second beat to a far more energetic pattern. It's quite subtle but the energy it adds is remarkable.

On its own, Visions is quite good. However, since all the previous tracks have made use of the same structure, it doesn't seem to stand out as well as it should. There's an unfortunate feeling of 'been there, done that,' and I hope this trend doesn't continue for the rest of the albums.

With more prominent organic percussion, The Poet has more of a bouncy start to it after some acid lead-in. Don't be fooled, though, as, like those that came before, there is a somber atmosphere to this track as well. Shorter than the rest, the use of the breakdown method mid-way through isn't as prominent, serving more as a brief pause in the momentum rather than a full-out break as no new melodies are introduced. A few additional elements like pianos and extra acid come and go but, for the most part, The Poet is a subtle song compared to the rest, making it a nice respite from all the simialarily structured tracks that's come before.

Floating comes across as a collection of elements that have already been used thus far, stripped down to their very basic components. Really, this makes some sense as Floating was the first single Giussani produced as Terra Ferma. Things build quite nicely in this song as percussion meshing synthetic with organic instruments accompany melodic string pads, synth stabs, and piano solos. As with the tracks that came before, a breakdown slows things down again midway through before building back up again, peaking with stuttering voice pads. Yet another strong song but perhaps a change of scenery would benefit this album's overall effect.

As if heading the call, The Snakecharmer opens up outdoors, with a campfire and crickets chirping while a large drum beats in the distance. A woodwind and string pad intro goes on for nearly three minutes but it's quite nice to listen to after six straight songs of straightforward trance numbers. Once things get going, The Snakecharmer opts for minimal use of trance elements, foregoing organic percussion, breakdowns, and evident melodies. Granted, there are some somber moments to be had thanks to pad work and subtly stuttering acid effects but, for the most part, this is a simple, hypnotic song, entrancing you with rhythms and sight leads.

Like the light at the end of a somber tunnel, Planet Ogo has a more optimistic tone about it. With mellow strings and voice pads, this song very simply goes about its business with the usual assortment of organic percussion and acid lines that we've come to expect thus far on this album. Neither trying to outdo anything already given, this track seems to be quite aware it's nearing the end of Turtle Crossing. And to finish off, Crazy People takes us through an ambient excursion of Gregorian chants, dark synth pads, progressively layered organic percussion, piano melodies, and a long sample of 12 Monkeys. All in all, it's a nice diversion from what's come before, and a fine way to finish off the album.

Any song on Turtle Crossing could make for a strong single but there is a problem to be had with cramming your album as such. The flow of it can come off a little repetitive without something to mix it up in between. Perhaps some of the differently themed songs toward the end could have made the transitions between the songs more intuitive had they been placed in a different track order.

This niggling nitpick isn't enough to not recommend this release though. In fact, there is more than enough on here that fans of trance old or new can equally enjoy. You have acid and quick rhythms for those who prefer the more hypnotic era of the style, and nice melodies for those whom discovered trance at a later date. It's quite remarkable that Giussani managed to craft an album that crossed these two time periods of trance's short history without loosing any credibility.

Score: 8/10
