Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - BTNHResurrection

Sony Music Entertainment: 2000

Feels like I've come full circle with- Ah, nope, not doing that bit again! Still, strange bit of circumstance that as we near this project's inevitable endpoint, I'm reviewing another act that kicked things off so long ago. Pretty sure it's the last of these – I don't have Yes' Captured Live lurking in the wings.

Anyhow, this was the CD that got me hooked on Bone Thugs, almost entirely due to one track. I'd heard their stuff before, thought it interesting for being so different with the double-time raps and harmonized choruses. BTNHResurrection convinced me these Cleveland chaps were operating on a totally different wavelength from contemporary gangstas though. All them others be rapping about getting drunk or stoned or crunk off PCP, but were any of them rapping about getting high off ecstasy? Not as heard on the track Ecstasy, and to a young raver such as I, it blew my mind. I don't know if these Thugs actually indulged in the ol' MDMA, but they sure captured the floaty, loved-up feeling of a good gurn in it, even if some of the lyrics turn weirdly violent at times. Ah, good ol' paranoia from a different kind of trip.

Still, one dope track isn't enough to make a fan of me (most of the time), but BTNHResurrection had plenty more going for it that convinced me these Bone brothers were worth scoping out further. Right from the drop in Show 'Em, they go into the swinging thug-hop, dropping verses as only Bone Thugs can. And hey, Flesh-N-Bone is here! Due to label nonsense, the fifth member of the group only sporadically appeared on prior albums. He gets plenty of space to show his verbal skills here, spitting on nearly every track. Remarkably, he kinda' sounds like Eazy-E, which is only fitting where Bone Thugs are concerned. Shame he'd be incarcerated shortly after this album's release, once again becoming just a mythical fifth member.

So you have your crime-riddin', gun toting street raps (2 Glocks, Murder One, Battlezone), the gettin' money raps (Resurrection (Paper, Paper), Can't Give It Up, Mind On Our Money), and the obligatory weed song (The Weed Song). There's also surprising reflection and future optimism here, as on tracks like, Change The World and Don't Worry, which would have been perfect cuts to end the album on. Unfortunately, three more tunes follow, none of which are bad but hobbles BTNHResurrection's play-through. Ending on a bonus cut of Bizzie Bone getting his mack on with One Night Stand just doesn't leave as lasting impression when compared to the double-shot of Mo' Murda and Shotz To Tha Double Glock on E. 1999 Eternal leaving you cold chillin'.

Re-arrange a few tracks, maybe cut a couple (Souljahs Marching feels redundant no matter what), and you'd have a record talked up just as fondly as any of Bone Thugs' '90s output. Sadly, bad management hobbled Bone Thugs' career in the following decade, and the group's been but a footnote since.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - E. 1999 Eternal

Ruthless Records: 1995/1998

The only Bone Thugs-N-Harmony album you’re supposed to have, even if you’re not a Bone Thugs-N-Harmony fan. Took me damn long enough to get it too! You’d think, after relaunching this blog with all that Bone Thugs love that E. 1999 Eternal was already been in my collection. Nope, though I did intend to pick it up shortly after getting that Creepin On A Come Up EP. Made sense considering how much I talked up the Cleveland crew’s debut LP and all. Not sure what happened though. I do recall getting side-tracked by hip-hop from Ice Cube and Public Enemy in the ensuing year, not to mention music funds being put towards a few “DJ Mix Series On A Budget” projects. Then there was another Waveform Records splurge, a Juno Reactor splurge, filling a few blanks from Wu-Tang Clan, an indulgence in Nine Inch Nails… wow, Lord Discogs sure is great at chronologically chronicling one’s buying habits!

Whatever the case, I finally done did get me some E. 1999 Eternal (because going back to playlist those early Ace Tracks reminded me as such), and I feel like such a tool for holding out this long for it. Right, I already know the hits off here practically beat for rap, so ingrained in mid-‘90s airplay they are. Tha Crossroads was the big one of course, and undoubtedly the sole reason many grabbed this album. Interestingly, the original version was quickly replaced by the more popular Dj U-Neek’s Mo Thug Remix that was featured on the classic Grammy nominated video. Their reflective, harmonious vibe is what many came to associate with the group, including yours truly when hearing tracks like 1st Of Tha Month and weed odes like Budsmokers Only and Buddah Lovaz. It’s not that I wasn’t aware of their heavier, thuggish ruggish mould, but it wasn’t the sound getting the radio (re: school dance) play or video rotation on MuchMusic. This album though, damn is it ever a heavy one.

The success of Tha Crossroads belies the fact Bone Thugs-N-Harmony cultivated an underground image of gritty, ultraviolent gangsta menace with a taste of the occult. Their world wasn’t just harrowing tales of the ghetto, but one also tempted further within the darkside of life, relying on spirits and demons for guidance in their lives. The contrast of rapid-fire double-time raps with harmonic soul is like hearing the angel and demon on your shoulders, though in the case of E. 1999 Eternal, the sinister tone of the music suggests all their sins are winning out. Down ’71 (The Getaway), Land Of The Heartless, Die Die Die, Eternal, and Mo’ Murda.. . all gripping street narratives with solid beats, chorus-chants, and ominous sounds, never sacrificing intensity for the chance at a little chart action. It was probably all a bit much for those expecting more Crossroads within, but that didn’t stop Bone Thugs from aspirations of rap dominance from here on out. For more ill than good, unfortunately.

ACE TRACKS: October 2012

Hey hey! Another milestone reached! Or achievement accomplished. Or task completed. Or obsession sated. Whatever the case, this marks the end of all these backtrack ACE TRACKS playlists. I mean, wow, October 2012. Such a long time ago now, isn’t it. I still feel like I only recently started doing this, yet here we are, nearing the end of Obama’s second term as President of Everything Forever – when I was writing these reviews, there was still some actual debate over Romney’s chances!

I had no idea whether this endeavor would sustain itself either, a lot of those October writings rather shaky to my eyes. Nor did I have any clue if I’d get any sort of significant audience for my musings, especially when I was so freely drifting away from what most would consider an electronic music blog right out the gate. I was mostly making up my format as I went along, and didn’t really find my groove until late in the month. I honestly feel the Asian Dub Foundation review marked my proper starting point, if nothing else because it’s always easier to rip into music than just discuss it. Or more fun to write and read, anyway.

Full track list here.

MISSING ALBUMS:
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Beat The Devil’s Tattoo
Octagen - Collected Works Vol. 2
Globular - Colours of The Brainform
Frankie Bones - Computer Controlled 2: Live In California

Percentage Of Hip-Hop: 11%
Percentage Of Rock: 6%
Most “WTF?” Track: Nine Inch Nails - Closer To God (not that it’s shocking by any stretch, but it’s definitely abrasive compared to the rest)

Remember when it seemed like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony was a rap obsession of mine? Eh, probably not, since I’ve no idea how many readers here were even around for those early days of this blog. How about when I’d go from reputable electro to cheesy euro dance to prog rock and with a dash of house thrown in? Geez, was that first month ever all over the place. Still, with how settled a lot of my music purchases have turned these last few months, I kinda’ miss that spontaneity, that unpredictability of just what I might review next (trance? Ambient? Pants?). Maybe it’s time for another used shop haul…

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Creepin On Ah Come Up

Ruthless Records: 1994

Just when I thought I was out of the 'C's, I get pulled back in. I'd actually hoped to cover this in proper order but circumstances dictated otherwise. While doing the two Bone Thugs-N-Harmony Collections, I realized an oversight on my part: a lack of owning their classic debut EP Creepin' On Ah Come Up, primarily due to never seeing much point in getting it when a pair of its songs already appeared on The Collection, Vol. 1. It became one of many, many releases filed under my “Get If Have Ample Disposable Income” list. Fast forward, and I have ample disposable income. May as well get on filling in some blanks, right? Shame Vancouver now sucks for music shopping, so yay Amazon, but boo waiting on delivery.

Even in my 'meh, rap, whatever' years, I was familiar with Creepin'. This and Bone Thugs' proper debut full-length E. 1999 Eternal were quite popular in the town I spent most of my teenage/young adult life, regularly selling out at the electronics store I worked at. I think this one sold better, on account it was the cheaper of the two so even the poorest of teens could buy it. I know I heard it at some point, but it never sunk in for me then, probably because Creepin' sounded too typical of West Coast thug rap for my untrained ears to appreciate. Man, was I ever ignorant to hip-hop then.

The two classics from this are Thuggish Ruggish Bone and Foe Tha Love Of $, which I already talked about. Rounding things out are two (yes, two!) intros, the proper first that Eazy-E and Yella produced, and the second Mr. Ouija, where the group makes their presence felt. Given the group’s known melodic harmonies, the occult themes surrounding these two are surprising. In fact, this whole EP lacks the gentle tones of later work, instead keeping things raw and aggressive while maintaining their cohesion as a tight ensemble (guess they’d yet to be swept away in calming weed bliss).

The other three cuts are No Surrender, Down Foe My Thang, and the titular Creepin’. No Surrender probably could have been included on all those ‘best of’ releases, but since it’s similar to Thuggish Ruggish Bone, I can see why it wasn’t; still, kick-ass talkbox action to be had there. Grittier Down Foe My Thang and the titular Creepin’ are strong tracks too, but strictly album orientated material. For a mini-album as strong as this one though, that’s hardly a bad thing.

If you’re ready to take the Bone Thugs plunge beyond their Collections, this likely isn’t the best place to start; rather, try the platinum edition of E. 1999 Eternal which includes Creepin’ as a bonus disc. As for myself, I wanted to get this separate because it makes my CD collection look bigger. AND YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT A GUY WITH A BIG CD COLLECTION, AMIRITE!?

(he ain’t shit compared to the guy with the big vinyl collection.)

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - The Collection (Volume 2)

Ruthless Records: 2000

Why release one collection of previous work when you can release two and charge twice the price! Alright, this isn’t that cynical of a comp’, but it is bizarre to see a second volume of Bone Thugs but two years after the last one. How could there even be enough material for this? Well, there’s more to the Bone Thugs story than their main singles and albums. Solo projects! Extended posse albums! Unreleased songs! All quality! Well, maybe not Ghetto Cowboy. That one’s just too silly.

Still, you get some tracks that simply didn’t make the cut on the previous collection (Thug Luv), collaborations where they appeared on other’s albums (Don’t Hate On Me was on a Jermaine Dupre album, and Hook It Up featured on a No Limit movie soundtrack -yes, Master P made movies, and yes, you’re allowed to laugh at that), cuts from the Mo Thugs Family, and remixes of tunes from the BTNHResurrection album that came out the same year.

Meanwhile, unless Discogs is lying to me, nearly a third of Volume Two features unreleased material, though whether old or new, the inlay don’t say. Probably the best of this lot is Sleepwalkers, which features an Eazy-E verse that’s fire, and makes for a suitable bookend to the whole Collection saga considering it was the Eazy-E featured Foe Tha Love Of $ that opened Volume 1.

Of course, you’re likely thinking this has the hallmarks of a ‘Thugs Fan Only’ release, and you’d be right. Though the quality of music’s still high, unlike the previous collection, this one doesn’t flow nearly as well, likely due to the disparate origins of these tracks. If you’re looking to get acquainted with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Collection: Volume One or the 2004-released double-disc Greatest Hits are better starting points.

As for the group itself, their legacy’s diminished since the high times of the 90s. Internal conflicts and spotty output has rendered their last decade of material almost inconsequential, while keeping up with solo projects became a chore for all but the most ardent fan. Maybe there’ll be another series of Collections to round up the better cuts, but considering how scattered across several record labels their later music is, that would prove legally difficult.

Hm, this review’s come up a bit short… I know, let’s play a game! The members of Bone Thugs all had ‘bone’ as a part of their aliases: for instance, Krayzie Bone, Wish Bone, Bizzie Bone, etc. For your reading distraction, here’s a list of potential members that could have been considered. Bone Dogg. Ice Bone. Bonestarr. Scooby Bone. Bone Digweed (this makes total sense, given the group’s fondness for the herb!). Bonecrusher. What, there’s already a rapper called that? Dammit, I lose then.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - The Collection (Volume 1)

Ruthless Records: 1998

I admit I was a late-bloomer when it comes to being a fan of hip-hop. Sure, there were songs and names I liked throughout my teenage years but it wasn’t until my 20s that I became properly hooked. As such, I missed out on most of the glorious output offered by the 90s and had quite a bit of catching up to do.

One of those “must hear” acts were Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, possibly among the most distinctive groups to emerge from hip-hop’s legacy. Their brand of soulful croon mixed with rapid-fire raps stood in stark contrast to the overt aggression most ‘thug rap’ offered, luring you in with a wonderful harmony, and then stunning you with violent content. Their backing tracks, mostly produced by DJ U-Neek, were similarly distinct, thick G-funk rhythms coupled with sparkling bells or pitched Moogs. Even their origin was different, hailing from Cleveland and thus never becoming affiliated with any particular coast, despite Eazy-E providing them their initial break.

They also cracked the mainstream with Tha Crossroads, a tribute to their deceased mentor Mr. Wright. With the highly popular (and somewhat controversial) video in heavy rotation, there was no way I could not have noticed this group. But eh, I was in the throes of ‘techno’ - nice song, cool vid, back to my German trance. It was an oversight I intended to rectify when I started my hip-hop exploration, and what better place to start than a greatest hits package?

At the time of this release, Bone Thugs had only released two albums, one of which was a double album (because that’s just what hip-hop artists did for sophomore efforts in the 90s). Fortunately, there were enough assorted EPs, remixes, and guest appearances to fill out a respectable, if not comprehensive, collection of Bone Thugs music.

Appropriately, things kick off with the Eazy-E featuring Foe Tha Love Of $, which is pretty good, but not the best offering here. The first chunk of tracks showcases the group’s melodic side, and just how amazingly tight of a vocal unit they could be. After a couple tracks they were guests on - including the Notorious B.I.G.’s Notorious Thugs - we delve into the tougher side of Bone Thugs. Oh, there’s still charming harmonies to be had, but one feels a degree of menace to their words that wasn’t present in the earlier cuts. Body Rott is a perfect example of their ability to switch between regular and double-time rapping to a G-funk groove. Closing out, there’s some curiosos like remixes and covers, plus the requisite bliss-out weed song that also became something of a trademark. In all, Collection, Vol. 1 is a solid primer to the Bone Thugs story.

Yet, there are still omissions. For instance, where’s Tha Crossroads? There’s a version of Crossroads here, but it’s definitely not the one from the video. And the 2Pac collab’ Thug Luv? Only one weed song?

Yeah, about that…
