faru - Utasava

Carpe Sonum Novum: 2018/2022

I'm really getting into some 'off the grid' music lately. What can I say? When a bit of cover art strikes my fancy, followed by sound samples that scintillate my stapes, I'm an easy sucker. This one I found particularly striking in that the sepia photo reminded me of Ultimae Records, yet the music within most decidedly did not. Nor did it sound like much of anything I've yet heard on Carpe Sonum. Neither label has ever gone quite so... world beaty.

Turns out that was something of a departure for Fabian Ruf as well, most of his musical compositions hanging out in the ambient drone category I've indulged plenty of over the years. Okay, he hasn't released a robust discography yet, his Bandcamp page only offering a handful of titles to his faru moniker, but one of those includes a Silent Season EP (Through Darkness Comes Light), so making significant inroads quite early on. From the looks of things, this Utasava is his first physical roll-out, Carpe Sonum Novum offering up a CD option for this album. And as mentioned, quite the turn away from the sort of Archives-styled ambient he was making to that point. Sometimes though, a vacation in a foreign land does wonders for one's inspiration. Having a recording microphone on hand capturing all those unique sounds doesn't hurt either.

And wander through a new realm he done did, opener Walk To Sri Pada almost entirely field recordings, folk and fauna busying themselves all around you, save a singular sitar tone and drumming guiding us along. The sounds of the street are so acute, I actually feel like those darn crows are dive bombing me! No, wait, that's those darn crows on my regular morning jaunts – the track is just giving me PTSD hearing their angry caws pan from right to left.

Regardless, the real highlight of this album is second track The Sacred Mountain, a near twenty-minute excursion into deep meditation as a temple monk sings through all manner of industrial distortion. I've seen this piece compared to Alio Die or Popol Vul, though as always my reference point remains Rapoon. It does eventually morph into more traditional ambient, but man, hearing those effects on this man's voice is some other-wordly vibes. It also kinda' makes the rest of Utasava come off rather tame and safe in comparison.

Not that there's anything wrong with tracks like Indian Ocean, Makar Sankrati and Along The Coast, it's just world beat and ambient dub paths well travelled since the days of Loop Guru. Meanwhile, the glitchy psy-dub of Mirissa and industrial techno of Summre Rain (!!) throw such a left turn on Utasava, you'll be forgiven for thinking you've somehow stumbled into an entirely different album. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the diversity. It's just bizarre going through such an intense meditative journey with The Sacred Journey, only to have gabber beats thumping some twenty-five minutes later. Well, unless you're Rapoon, I guess.

Gabriel Le Mar - Shared Fictions

Carpe Sonum Novum: 2020

I've passively mentioned the need to dig deeper into Gabriel le Mar for years now, so it's about time to properly poop in that pot (or however that saying goes). What CDs to get, though? Something off the defunct Spirit Zone Recordings? That undoubtedly rare Reel Time (because anything off Elektrolux is rare at this point)? The most eye-popping item from his Capre Sonum Novum catalogue? Oh, but Flashin' On is already sold-out, darn it all.

That... is actually happening more frequently with Carpe Sonum, come to think of it. Even newer items, like Dr. Atmo's To You, Humanity, and Sven Kössler's Bck T• Lvng, run out swiftly. To say nothing of whatever edition of that Pete Namlook tribute box-set Die Welt Ist Klang is up to now. Man, and here Carpe Sonum was, that ambient techno label you could count on not running out of their limited-run CD stock.

Anyhow, I settled on Shared Fictions, for two reasons. One, it was the most recent item from Mr. le Mar when I happened by the Bandcamp shop – not much more scientific than that, my friends. Still, the fact it was a double-LP made the deal a little bit sweeter. Sure, the second CD is another of Gabriel's 'stripped' sessions, providing beatless versions of tracks off the album proper, but that's a gimmick I'm game for another round after hearing it on his first Stripped release.

The PR blurb has Mr. le Mar claiming inspiration from the fantastical literature and stories of human history, which he wished to express through... only eight tracks? Huh, well, there's something to be said for being concise. Still, though there are some elements of such within the titles (Stay In Wonderland, World Tree, Mythical Past, etc.), I can't really say the same for the music on hand. By and large, this is a collection of tight, groovy psy-dub tunes, with little in the way of post-Shpongle influenced waffle. Sometimes the acid gets a good workout (Deep Focus, Collective Dreamworld), elsewhere Gabriel works in a little guitar jamming, and gosh, that bass playing in City Of Thoughts sure seems familiar. Wait a moment... *checks liner notes* Okay, it's not him. Didn't think so, as the bass tone didn't quite match. Can't blame me for thinking ol' Laswell might have been hanging about for a session though, as this tune really does sound like one of his.

So even if the theme of Shared Fictions seems muddled, the psy-dub on hand is dope enough to not worry about it. How does the bonus disc fare, then? It's certainly a different vibe, and not just because the lack of propulsive rhythms. Tracks are rearranged so they flow more like a downbeat album compared to Shared Fictions Prime, and it's not like they're totally absent of groove either. You just have less things going on, letting you focus on specific details over a grand picture. It's like watching the subbed version of a foreign film.

Faex Optim - Look Around You

Carpe Sonum Novum: 2017

Not gonna' beat around the bush here: Faex Optim is influenced by Boards Of Canada. Like, very influenced, to such a point that you could convince a layperson they're the same act. They're not though, Faex Optim the works of one Wesley MacDonald, who, despite also residing in Scotland, is not part of the Hexagon Sun commune. Or maybe he is, but on their super-secret members list, one that even Wiki or Lord Discogs isn't aware of. To sum things up within this first paragraph, if you like Boards Of Canada, you should like Look Around You. Heck, I'll reach for it sooner than I will official BoC media like Geogaddi or Twoism.

And some Boardsy uber-fans may be snarking, “Why should I settle for someone who just sounds like Boards Of Canada, when I could listen to the real deal?” Um, maybe because 'the real deal' aren't really making music anymore? One (1) album in the past seventeen years isn't exactly a robust modern catalogue. No wonder some out there would start making their own hauntology Boards music, dissecting and distilling the duo's attributes to such a point you couldn't tell the difference in a blind test. I'd totally believe there's a robust 'BoC-tology' scene out on the internet by now, sharing music on forums like twoism, with splintering among its participants between soft-synth emulators and purist analogue performers, using only the vintage gear Michael and Marcus utilized.

Clearly Faex Optim is someone who's been deemed worthy of carrying on the Boards brand of music. I've seen no blowback for him being so faithful to their sound, no irate claims of style-biting, riding coattails, or ripping off. Carpe Sonum Records had enough faith in him to release a debut album called Tris·kai·dek·a·pho·bi·a (heh, numerology ...of course), and continue to do so, another out just a couple years ago now (Look Around You was released between the two). Given that the label had an unfortunate incident with another 'heavily-influenced by BoC' producer early on, it's nice to see they didn't lose the faith with this micro-scene.

I feel like I'm doing Mr. MacDonald a disservice by going on about the idea of Boards-influenced music rather than talking specifically about his Boards-influenced music. Really though, is there much else for me to say? I could tell you Irn Bru features lazy trip-hop rhythms, warped backing synths as though played through decades-old over-dubbed tapes, and a charming lead as performed on a half-working kid's organ. Then you'd go, “well that just sounds like a Boards Of Canada tune you're describing”, and I'll be all like “I know, right!?”

The only way the comparison could not be ninety percent on the nose is if I was talking to someone who'd never heard of a Boards Of Canada tune in their life. I know they're out there, folks who's first exposure to this sound will be Faex Optim rather than BoC. Can't see them reading this blog though.

Saafi Brothers - Live On The Roadblog

Iboga Records/Carpe Sonum Novum: 2014/2015

Yet another in a long, long, long (oh Gods, just so damn long) list of acts I've sorely neglected. By all accounts, Saafi Brothers are a group I should have dove into sooner. All the pieces are there for me to have checked them out at some point, members with discographies I've crossed with plenty of times.

Most prominent of these is, of course, Gabriel le Mar, who I have heard in scattered amounts over the years, and never been let down by his output. Another member is Luca Anzilotti, whom most probably don't know off hand, but have definitely heard in the past, being one-half of the famed euro-dance outfit Snap! Michael Kohlbecker isn't one I'm familiar with, though he's been active on the scene many decades, his Eternal Basement project probably his most recognizable alias. Alex Azary (of Aural Float and Elektrolux fame) was also with the group on its first album, so all said, quite the super-group of German producers here.

And what sort of music did these numerous talents create together? Why, nothing less than the invention of prog-psy, is what! Okay, maybe not quite, their works more of an ambient dub techno blend with wordly psy-chill, but tell me 1997 tracks like On Air and Internal Code Error don't predict that genre emerging in the coming century.

As you can imagine with a group containing so many busy-bodies, reconvening for an album session isn't the easiest endeavour for Saafi Brothers. It would explain the sparse discography (and my overlooking of said discography), the group seemingly disbanding after 2007's Supernatural, save live gigs. Still, such gigs seemed to inspire the trio to actually start recording some of those sessions, which they did, consolidating the best outings in the studio for this here Live On The Roadblog album. Initially released as a digital item on prog-psy outfit Iboga Records, it was given the CD treatment on Carpe Sonum Records off-shoot Novum. That isn't as strange of a 'worlds colliding' pairing as you'd think, what with Gabriel le Mar being something of a fixture with the sub-label.

Listening through Live On The Roadblog, you definitely get a 'live' feel for how these tracks were crafted, everything quite loose in arrangement. Still, with most hovering around the six-to-eight minutes mark, they seldom wander off in rambly jams, a clear structure in their progression. Just, y'know, not so stiff in execution as most studio works go. As for the types of tunes, you get dubby world beats (Infinity Is Reality, Ghosts In The Tree), prog-psy groovers (Running Free, In The Eye Of The Storm, Moving Crossroads), blissy chillers (Feeling Lone, Touched By An Angel, Moments Of Clarity), and... electro-dub bangers? Wow, where did How High Can You Get? come from?

The music is solid stuff for sure, but man, all the drippy-hippie spoken word bits, I could have done with less of. When the whole album's concept is 'following one's wanderlust' though, I guess it comes with the territory.

Rapoon - Downgliding

Carpe Sonum Novum: 2015

Starting a label as a spiritual successor to Pete Namlook's Fax +49-69/450464 is all well and good, but surely Carpe Sonum Records has greater aspirations than being an outlet for modern ambient techno musicians. You bet, and after a few years shaking things out with their main label, an off-shoot emerged with the handle of Carpe Sonum Novum. Far as I can tell, this sub-label mostly features music that isn't quite in line with the vintage Fax+ stylee: techno dub, modern classical, future jazz, acid IDM, and the like. Gabriel Le Mar has released a small pile of CDs here, as well as Carpe Sonum Prime regulars Mick Chillage, Thomas Heckmann, and Krystian Shek.

For my inaugural dive into Carpe Sonum Novum, however, I'm going with a little more Rapoon, because we can never go wrong with a little more Rapoon. Unless it's another album like Song From The End Of The World - brrr, it still sends shivers down my spine. Downgliding isn't like that one though. In fact, it's unlike any of the previous three Rapoon albums I've reviewed, though that probably isn't saying much. With a discography as vast as Robin Storey's, odds are good you're getting variety aplenty, never knowing quite what you'll get with each project. It's half the fun!

Actually, Downgliding has some similarities to another Rapoon album I've covered, Psi-Transient, in that they both have elements of modern classical – pianos, plucking strings, and the like. However, whereas Psi-Transient fed such music through Robin's industrial grinder, Downgliding plays things mostly straight, which makes sense for a record out on Carpe Sonum Novum. Can't see off-putting noisy assaults meshing well with RCO's Radical Chill Out, yo'.

The fanciest effects we get are offered in the titular opener Travelling Under. The longest track at eleven minutes long, Robin layers minimalist drones in reverse delay, crafting a mood that, while not eerie or uneasy, certainly airs on the side of cryptic. Follow-up Ocean's Pull uses plucking synths while scaling back the reverse delay effects some, and An Edge Of Blue drenches piano and pads tones in them. Most of the remaining tracks flit between drone tones, plucking synths and grand piano pieces (well, about as grand as Pro-Tools pianos can sound, of which Robin admits to in the liner notes ...and are remarkably grand indeed), many utilizing reverse delay in some capacity.

As for a theme linking all these pieces together, let's see if you can glean one from these track titles: A Weight Of Worlds. Ahab's Odyssey. Encircled. Voyage Fall. The Siren's Eyes. Washed Ashore In Alabaster. Yeah, there's a sense of traversing about the bounding main, and with the modern classical approach to it all, a surprisingly 'high art' vibe for a Rapoon album. It's probably a strained comparison, but I'm most reminded of Harold Budd and Brian Eno's The Pearl, another album I had significant 'marine' feels for. If it was performed with a lot of reverb delay, anyway.
